Stand Out With A Custom Twitter Background - How To Create The Perfect Twitter Background
Shine From The Rest
This is a step by step guide to customizing your Twitter background and help you create something that really stands out from the rest of the herd. Use all the white space to convey your message and promote your brand, keep your readers interested in what you are saying.
Falling Short Of The Potential
It is surprising how many people, in particular blogs and business owners that utilize the power of Twitter consistently fall short of the potential exposure. Most use the stock, bland background images, the default solid colors that just leave the page flat and uninspired. My favorites are those canned flowery, whimsical, or fluffy cloud themes that every twelve year girl dreams of.
Capturing Your Audiences Attention
During the last couple of weeks I have been pushing Twitter to promote my Design Firm with the hope to draw even more traffic. My first thought was, "how can I grab attention to my landing page?" Yes having good content and interesting feeds packed with useful information is essential. Realizing that my Twitter page was not consistent with my website, guestbook, and blog made me create a background that tied everything together. Now everything has the same theme, components, and branding. My Twitter followers are now growing at very fast rate. Traffic to my sites has increased. Life is Good Again…
“Capturing your audiences attention long enough to read those witty and remarkable one hundred and forty characters requires some stunning graphics.”
Consistency, Consistency…
Being a strong believer of keeping your website, your blog, and all your social media sites consistent with a common theme or branding is essential for successful marketing. Pick your logo and build from that, use it at every opportunity. This gives you a more polished professional look. Basic rule is keeping it simple because you will need to modify the size for different websites. Example, check out with PayPal, your logo will be a certain size, the logo header on your WordPress Header will be larger. By keeping your design simple, you will be more able to change the size while keeping your brand in tack.
Keep Your Followers Coming Back
You can even update your background to reflect the current news, new promotions, post monthly coupons, or update photographs. Keep your followers coming back and always surprise them with new content and wonderful images. Think of Twitter backgrounds as an extension of your life, your business, and your brand – constant change while keeping your basic theme consistent.
What You Need To Create The Backgrounds
Creating the backgrounds is pretty straight forward and you can utilize just about any image editing software, Photoshop, Picasa, or any software that you can manipulate the image components or layers. Sounds more complicated than it really is and will demonstrate shortly what I mean.
You can create a basic background in just a few minutes and as you grow more confident and add more components, more time will be required. Remember you are building your image, what potential customers, or existing friends first see when they land on your Twitter page. This isn’t a race and you can always revert back to a stock image while your rework your background.
The old cliché, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression” is somewhat true, but luckily you have the ability to change the background.
Let’s Get Started With The Twitter Backgrounds
- Step One - Using photoshop or some other image editing software...make sure you can save it as a jpg, or png image.
- Create a new image, by pressing file, new, size 1240 x 800 then save it
- Step Two - Now you can start working on your image. Keep in mind that 2/3 of the image from the center out will be occupied with the twitter app.
- Now get creative, use your logo, text, and keep the objects to your left and far right. What ever image components are in the middle wont be seen.
- You will have to play with this until it works for you. Keep it simple then build on it.
- Step 3 - Now that you have your image completed, make sure to save it as a jpg or ping file. Remember that you can always change again later. For now use it as a test to see how it will look on twitter.
- Step 4 - Log into your twitter page.
- On the top right you will see "settings" click on it
- Then you will notice another menu, click on "design"
- One more menu Click on "change background image"
- Then hit "choose file" and locate the image you just save
- Then press save changes. I find that I have to do this twice. You will notice that your result will show up immediately. If not just do it again.
